Dan the Doctor, Dan the Vet

WARNING:  This entry is not for the faint of stomach...be ye warned!

The other day we noticed our dog had a knot on the top of her head.  At first we thought she had played a little too rough with the other dogs on the compound, but upon closer examination we discovered this was not the case; Lucy had a dreaded bot fly larva .  These wonderful little creatures lay an egg under the skin of an unsuspecting host where it hatches, feeds, and grows at a disgusting rate.  We knew we had to remove the parasite, so after attempting to squeeze it out (which did nothing but annoy Lucy) Dan went to the hospital for a little advice on how to remove it.  We were told to cover the breathing hole where it was with vaseline, gauze, and tape so as to suffocate the critter.  A few hours later Dan could hopefully get it out.

LUCY ALL WRAPPED UP

Unfortunately the larva hadn't died after the vaseline trick and Dan had to cut the creature out, but we finally got the bugger with the help of some numbing Lidocaine for Lucy, a scapel, and our friend Matt's big muscles to hold poor Lucy down.

A PICTURE OF LUCY'S BOT FLY LARVA AND A BETTER EXAMPLE (FROM THE INTERNET)

Our poor patient is resting comfortably in the house tonight.

  1. Hi to all! I have been thinking about you lately so I got on your website(found the address on the picture that we have on the fridge) I so much enjoyed reading about all the happenings in your life. The kitchen set that Jael has is so cute and I am sure that Grandpa and Caleb enjoyed making it for her. I so much enjoyed the story about the three brothers that came into your home. What a story for Caleb to tell when he gets older. I am not sure if he will remember the really neat bedtime story, but at least maybe he will remember them and the blow gun shooting lesson.
Jon wants to know when you are going to be in Quito so you can operate on our dog. She has had a "bump" for quite awhile. I am hoping it is not the same thing.
We took Krista to the states to start college. We got her all set up but won't be there for the orientation that starts this week-end, but she has her big sister there to help her through it.
We miss you guys and let us know if you have some time next time you come to Quito, hopefully we will be around.
Our prayers are with Kristina and the little one. God bless you richly and watch over you.

  2. I love reading your blogs! See the picture of the Bott fly larva makes me glad that we don't have a dog! Of course we don't really have to worry about that over here. I'm not sure what some of the pictures were of. I was behind on reading your blog so I read the last 3. Where are you in the picture of Dan and Jael where Jael is completely wet? Kris how are you feeling? Keep me posted and have a great Labor Day! Syds
